HISTORY: Three Houses general and Ashe.

PERSONALITY: First impressions of Ashe are usually not wrong. His thoughts, his feelings, his passions, and even the parts of his past that he isn't proud of are generally not deeply hidden, if not worn right on his sleeve. One doesn't have to look especially hard to find just why he is the way he is.

When Ashe was younger, his birth parents had succumbed to illness and passed away, leaving Ashe and his younger brother and sister to fend for themselves on the streets. Though he tried to provide for them honestly, whatever work he could find just wasn't enough and Ashe turned to stealing. He takes no pride in this part of his past, and often remarks about it with some measure of shame, though he does know that he was only doing what he needed to do in order to help him and his siblings survive.

One night, a noble by the name of Lonato caught Ashe attempting to steal from his mansion, and rather than turning him over to the authorities, the man took Ashe and his siblings in. This kind act changed Ashe's life, and it's easy to tell that this is what shaped his personality the most. Ashe is undeniably kind, bright, and gregarious, always encouraging and praising others. His sweet, earnest nature means that even people who are more... difficult to get along with find themselves opening up around Ashe. We see this often in his interactions with his classmates, who later become his comrades-in-arms in the war to unite Fódlan. He manages to pull some kind words out of Felix, the prickliest wet cat of a person one could ever hope to meet, just by the sheer power of genuine enthusiasm. In another instance, he faces his fear of a dark tower to retrieve a lost item for a friend, simply because it has sentimental value and he doesn't want to see her give up something so important to her.

Alongside that kindness that seems to permeate nearly his every action, is a big helping of idealism. Ashe is a big believer in the notions of justice, compassion, and following one's dreams. He wants to pay the kindness shown him forward by becoming a knight, a valiant hero who helps the weak. Much of his time is spent with his nose in various books about knights of old, tales both true and fictional of heroes who always did the right thing and served their masters to the best of their ability. Ashe's ideas of knighthood are shaped by the men and women in these stories, and by his idealized image of his adoptive father, and adopted older brother, Christophe.

Though his sense of justice is shaped by storybooks, he's not so naive to believe that he has the power to change the world on his own, but if he can help someone for even just a moment, if he can leave the world just a little bit better than the way it was, then he'll have done his job. Ashe is quick to give his own money to a man he caught stealing after learning that he was doing it to provide for his daughter, even knowing he didn't have the money or power to solve all of the man's problems. He's also aware that the man could have been lying, trying to take advantage of his kind heart, but that's a risk that Ashe is willing to take.

Of course, Ashe is aware that not every problem can be solved with kindness. He has seen his fair share of fighting, often accompanying Prince Dimitri and the rest of his former classmates into battle. War is an ugly reality for him and his friends, and though it has certainly caused them to grow up to varying degrees, it somehow hasn't stolen away Ashe's kindhearted, justice-driven, and idealistic nature. For someone so soft-hearted, Ashe is possessed of surprising resolve, though he is not without his moment's of doubt. Three years after his adoption by Lonato, Ashe's adoptive brother, Christophe, was executed by the church, accused of taking part in the tragedy that took the life of Dimitri's father, the king. Some years later, Ashe is able to uncover the real truth behind Christophe's death – that he was executed for conspiring to kill the Archbishop of the church, an act that Christophe believed was the right thing, and that it was one of Christophe's dearest friends, Catherine, who turned him in. This truth shakes Ashe to his core, and when confronted with Catherine, he lashes out in anger and sadness, claiming he no longer knows what's right.

It's actually Catherine herself who sets him straight again, telling him that he does know. That everyone knows what's right to them, and that no two people have the same notion of justice. Ashe seems to take these words to heart, admitting that while he still hates Catherine for what she did to his brother, he trusts her and admires her as a knight, and that he would like to strive to be her friend, because that's what feels right to him.

Ashe still carries the loss of his birth parents, and later his adoptive family (Christophe having been executed, and Lonato having died after being coerced into a rebellion against the church) deep in his heart. He still grieves for them now and again, but for the most part he takes that sorrow and uses it to motivate himself. He cooks to keep the memory of his parents alive, he strives to realize his dream of becoming a knight to keep the memories of Christophe and Lonato alive. He wants to be someone his family, all of them, can be proud of, and he hopes that by keeping to his ideals and his resolve, he's doing just that.

It’s worth noting that Lonato is the reason Ashe was even able to pursue his dream of becoming a knight in the first place – he is the one who allowed Ashe to attend the military academy at Garreg Mach monastery. Ashe is very aware of his status as a commoner in a sea of nobles, even long after he and his classmates have grown from students to adults and full-fledged soldiers. As a result, Ashe has a tendency to regard himself as nothing special. Often, he’s asked to share something about his home or life, and he remarks that it’s nothing exciting. He still obliges, but he can’t imagine why people of such high status would want to hear about the life of a commoner. In this same vein, Ashe doesn’t like seeing his noble classmates, Prince Dimitri especially, going out of their way for him. He doesn’t mind running errands for people, really!

There is one slight oddity in Ashe's otherwise even-keeled personality: he is absolutely terrified of ghosts, in a world where, as far as we know, ghosts aren't even real. This comes up several times with several people, Ashe even exclaiming in one instance, “You haven't seen what I've seen!” While we have no idea just what happened to leave him so terrified, dark places, especially being snuck up on in said dark places, are enough to make Ashe totally lose his composure. He yelps, he offers up desperate prayers, and forgets how to function like a real human being until he realizes that nothing is wrong or the perceived danger has passed.

Well, we all have our quirks.

ABILITIES/SKILLS:
↣ ARCHERY: Ashe’s weapon of choice on the battlefield is a bow, and he wields it quite well. Most of his canon combat skills simply boil down to “shooting really good” and “shooting really good from really far away”. He has no skill with magic and lacks a crest (basically an inherited magical power up) like many of his noble classmates have, so he just has to rely on raw skill to get things done on the battlefield.

↣ COOKING: While they were still living, Ashe’s parents owned and ran a restaurant. He picked up a lot of tips and tricks by watching his parents, namely his father, work in the kitchen. Many of his classmates come to him for advice about cooking, and he finds a lot of joy in working in the kitchen.

↣ THIEVERY: Whether it's picking locks or picking pockets, Ashe has a knack for stealing. After the death of his parents, Ashe fell into he life of a thief as a way to provide for his younger siblings. He’s not proud of it, but there’s no denying he was good at it. Even as an adult, he still leans on these skills from time to time, evident throughout the game as he can open any doors or chests on a map without needing a key.

INVENTORY/COMPANIONS:
A bow
A quiver of arrows
A set of lockpicks
A well-loved leather-bound tome of tales about knights
Vulnerary (minor healing potion) x3

FACTION CHOICE: Court of Stars

REASON: This was a pretty easy choice, actually, as Ashe is probably one of the more idealistic characters to be found in Three Houses. He keeps the knights from old tales and legends as his role models, believing in the idealized concepts of justice and chivalry found in the stories. He tries to embody these beliefs in real life, and he wants nothing more than to become a hero of justice, striving for a world where no one has to suffer.

TATTOO: Sagitta, the Arrow, on the inside of his right forearm.
